Product description

This helmet is based on a 10th century original found in Gnezdovo in the Smolensk region of Russia. The settlement of Gnezdovo or Gnyozdovo is located in modern-day Russia near Smolensk. It dates back to the 10th century and has a mixture of Slavic, Rusvik and Varangian influences. Helmets like this were worn by the Byzantine-Viking Varangian guard as well as by the Vikings in the Baltic Sea area (Rusvik). This helmet is handmade from 1.6 mm thick (16-gauge) steel and has an adjustable, genuine leather liner. It has a riveted chain mail collar that protects the neck and lower part of the face. The helmet bowl has an extra padded inlay and chin strap. This helmet has an antique (patinated) finish that makes it look as if it has survived the test of time. The chainmail collar is made of round rings unriveted. With a circumference of approximately 68 cm (without padding) (65 cm with padding), this helmet fits most head circumferences, ranging from approximately 58 cm to 61-62 cm. It has an inner width at ear level is approximately 21 cm and the depth from front to back at eye level measures approximately 24.5 cm. Note: This product is carefully covered with a layer of oil upon packaging which acts as a temporary (protective) layer against corrosion (rust), which can be easily wiped off with an oil remover or even a dry cloth. To create more space in the helmet, the hem insert can be removed.
