Product description

This halberd is based on 16th-century originals. It features an open axe blade to reduce weight. Ideal for 16th-century costumes.

The halberd is a weapon with a long wooden shaft and an iron point, with an axe and a hook beneath. Contrary to popular belief, the hook was not meant to enlarge wounds, but to block or catch enemy weapons.

Thanks to the length of the shaft, a halberdier could strike more powerfully than with a sword. The weapon was effective in attack, especially against cavalry, but less suited for defense. On battlefields such as Wisby (1361) and Towton (1461), skulls have been found split entirely by a halberd.

With the advent of firearms, the halberd disappeared from the battlefield but remained in use by ceremonial units. The most famous example is the Swiss Guard in Vatican City, who are still seen with halberds, though no longer using them in combat.
