Product description

This beautiful decorative sword is an asset for lovers of early medieval swords! The sword is an exact replica of an original from the 8th century that was excavated at Fetter Lane in London. In 1893 it was donated to the British Museum, where it is still on display for everyone to admire. The original grip is made of gold-plated silver and has remained very intact. Because of the expensive precious metal and the craftsmanship that was involved in the manufacture of this sword, archaeologists suspect that it was owned by an elite warrior or nobleman. The blade of the original has not been preserved, so for this replica a frequently occurring type of early medieval blade with a wide fuller was chosen. The grip of the replica is made of tinned bronze, this approaches the appearance of the silver original but the price remains lower. Just like the original, the grip is made from various parts that are riveted together. The grip and pommel are decorated with beautiful early medieval organic motifs. The sword is delivered including a brown leather scabbard with tinned bronze fittings and a belt loop so you can hang it on your belt. The blade of this sword is made of modern damast steel. Originally, damast steel consisted of a harder and softer carbon steel. The combination of the different steel types resulted in a high-quality steel with a pattern in the blade. Medieval technology for the production of damast steel is no longer in use today, modern application is mainly concerned with the increased visual value of the blade pattern.

Prevent rust and corrosion by oiling your weapons regularly. Remove rust easily with black sandpaper. Remove burrs with a whetstone. Make sure you have removed all burrs before using a battle-ready weapon, as they can cause wounds.

Maintenance & care
Just as with weaponry, you can care for your shoes and leatherware by applying a little Ballistol after cleaning. This prevents the leather from drying out.

The original method of making Damascus steel from Wootz steel was lost in the modern era. Nowadays, the name Damascus steel is used as a generic term for pattern welded / laminated or melted steel made out of two or more different steel types.
