This coin is a replica, based on originals that were minted during the reign of Alexander the Great, until 323 BC. The coin is made of patinated pewter and has a diameter of 2,5 cm.
Alexander the IIIrd, the Great (336-323 BC) was king of Macedonia until his death and hegemon and he is said to be the greatest conqueror in history. During his campaign Alexander conquered land as far as India. After his invasion of Egypt, he was named Pharao there. This was the beginning of an Hellenistic era during which Egypt, Persia, the Black Sea areas and India were influenced by Greek culture. The life of Alexander the Great is a popular motive in art because of his great popularity and military successes.
