The chainmail coif appeared at least as early as the 11th century AD. Chainmail coifs were worn either on their own or beneath a helmet. Many depictions, such as those in the Morgan Bible from 1250, show the chainmail coif fitting closely around the head. Leather laces were sometimes employed at the top to improve the fit, whilst additional laces could fasten the lower edge of the coif to the gambeson or hauberk, keeping the coif securely in place. For added comfort, a textile cap or arming cap could be worn underneath the coif.

The chainmail coif is based on original medieval coifs. The coif may be worn separately or beneath a helmet. It covers the shoulders, neck and head and has a square visor. The coif is constructed from round rings with an inner diameter of 8 mm.
Tip: when leather straps are attached to the gambeson, the neck part of this coif will stay in place much better.
