Product description

The thraex was a gladiator who was armed the Thracian way with a small square shield, the parmula, and a short sword with a slightly curved blade, the sica, which was supposed to cut the unprotected back of the opponent. He also wore a protector for his sword arm and shoulder, shin protectors, a broad belt and a helm with a plume, a visor and a high crest for protection. Together with the hoplomachus, the thraex was used against the murmillos, who were armed as Roman legionaries, to illustrate the contradiction between the Roman soldiers and their non-Italic enemies.

This brass thraex helmet is made after an original found in Pompeii. It is suitable for a head circumference up to 63 cm and it weighs 4,9 kg. The crest is decorated with a griffin, the companion of the revenge goddess Nemesis. The helmet has a decoration of a palm leaf symbolizing victory.
