Product description

The color purple was already in Antiquity very hard to produce. At least 3000 dogwhelks were needed to dye just one cloak purple! As a result, purple was already worth a fortune in the Mycenian culture. The dogwhelks were industrially grown in order to have enough for making purple. The Greek elite cavalry (consisting of the upper layer of the aristocracy) wore purple cloaks. The Romans appropriated this tradition but reserved the color only for the emperor and the imperial guard (Pretorian guard).
These dogwhelks are sold in sets of three. They are a unique natural product and perfect for art lessons and education. These dogwhelks are biologically grown and measure 3 to 6 cm.

This item is produced in limited quantities only. This means that every piece is unique. Sizes & finish may vary lightly from piece to piece.
