Product description

The hoplite shield is inspired by the early bronze shields used by the hoplites, the heavy infantry of ancient Greece. These soldiers were equipped with a large, round or oval shield, known as an aspis, which protected them in the fierce battles of the hoplite formation. The hoplites formed the backbone of the Greek army and were known for their discipline and strength. In addition to the Greeks, hoplites were also used in the coloniae such as Marseille and Epirus, where they protected the local population from enemy invasions. The Etruscans, who had a significant influence on the early Romans, also used hoplites and their characteristic shields. The hoplite shield was essential for defense in battle, as it provided a solid barrier against projectiles and blows from enemy weapons.

The shield is decorated with an image of Medusa, an iconic symbol from Greek mythology. Medusa was one of the three Gorgons and was characterized by her snake hair and the ability to turn anyone who looked at her into stone. Her image was often used as a deterrent against enemies, as it was believed that her gaze brought harm. In the ancient world, the image of Medusa was placed on shields, gates, and other weapons to offer protection and scare off enemy attackers. The presence of Medusa on this hoplite shield can be seen as both a protective amulet and a powerful symbol of the invincibility of the bearer, shielding them from danger and destruction.

The interior of the shield is lined with fitted foam-rubber for comfort. A beefy grip is wrapped in brown leather and a large leather band accommodates the forearm to better distribute the shields weight on the arm.
