Removing rivets

There are two different ways to remove a rivet. Whichever method you’re going to use, always make sure you’re wearing the appropriate safety gear!

Drilling

What do you need?

-Drill

-Stamp

-Hammer

How to remove a rivet with a drill:

Step 1:

With the stamp and hammer, tap a dent in the head of the rivet. If the head is too rounded, you can first flatten it a bit by hitting it with the hammer.

Step 2:

Place the drill in the dent and carefully drill the rivet through the hole it’s in.

Step 3:

Take a stamp to tap out the rivet fully. Watch out for sharp pieces and never push the rivet through with your fingers!

Chisel

What do you need?

-Chisel

-Hammer

How to remove a rivet with a chisel:

Step 1:

Wedge the tip of the chisel underneath the edge of the head of the rivet. Wiggle the chisel a bit to make sure the chisel is underneath the head.

Step 2:

Use the hammer to hit the end of the chisel until the head of the rivet breaks off. This will probably take a few tries. Be careful that the chisel won’t shoot out from underneath the rivet.

Step 3:

With the head now removed, you can see the pin of the rivet going through the steel. Place the chisel vertically on the rivet and use the hammer to tap the end of the chisel. This way you can tap the rivet out of the steel. If the rivet is quite small, you might want to use a stamp or screwdriver instead of the chisel.
