Product description

The spear with so-called "wings" or "perforated" spearhead, often associated with the Normans, actually has its origins in the Frankish Carolingian era. The Vikings adopted this spear and continued to use it, both as a war spear and a hunting spear, well into the High Middle Ages. On the battlefield, the protruding lugs on either side of the spearhead served to prevent the spear from penetrating too deeply in an attack (which would make it more difficult to pull the spear out) and to deflect enemy blows. When used during hunting (as a so-called "boar spear", specially designed for hunting wild boar and big game), these side wings not only offered protection against too deep penetration into the prey, but also gave the hunter extra control and protection against a wounded and restless animal. This impressively large medieval spearhead is made from hardened EN45 carbon steel. Measuring approximately 61 cm (24 in.) in length and cutting edges approximately 45.5 cm, the blade has a strong conical shape from a broad base to a narrow tip. This allows the bearer of the spear to inflict deep and wide stab wounds, as well as powerful slashing and slashing movements. Using two pre-drilled holes, the spearhead can be securely attached to the wooden shaft of your choice to create your very own winged spear or lance. Please note that shaft and additional mounting material are not included in the delivery.
