Product description
The surcotte, originally worn as a surcoat by men, became more popular among women from the thirteenth century onwards. This garment is meant to be worn over another item of clothing. The armholes of the surcotte became bigger and bigger, this was a popular fashion statement among medieval ladies. Eventually the holes reached to the hips, like this surcotte, and you could see the shift dress underneath. The medieval church did not consider this fashion statement very chaste, and referrred to the armholes as "the gates of hell." This surcotte is made of sturdy cotton canvas, which makes the garment suitable for spring and autumn. The hems have a finely woven cotton rib. The armholes reach to the hips. The surcotte can best be combined with a belt and shift dress. A perfect garment for re-enactment and LARP of the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries.
