A villa rustica is a rural variant of the urban Roman villa. Remains of villas such as this have been found even in Scotland and northern Germany, as a result of the Roman conquests. The villa rustica features a small inner garden (atrium) and two large column galleries.
Amongst those who have ever visited an old Roman home, it is well known that the Romans were very keen on a luxurious lifestyle. The houses were larger than the Celtic and Germanic constructions and on the inside they were often decorated with frescoes. The Roman Villa Rustica has a surface of 48 x 24 square metres. The two large complexes were connected by a garden and the building is crafted from bricks. The owners bought wine and olive oil from Italy and grain and pewter from Britain. Some villa rustica owners were ex-soldiers who had built up a pension after their time of service.
