A villa rustica is a rural variant of the urban Roman villa. Remains of villas like this have been found even in Scotland and North Germany, as a result of the Roman conquests. The villa rustica has a small inner garden (atrium) and two large column galeries.
Everyone who has ever visited an old Roman home, knows that they were very keen on a luxurious lifestyle. The houses were larger than the Celtic and Germanic constructions and on the inside they were often decorated with frescos. The Roman villa Rustica has a surface of 48 x 24 square metre. The two large complexes were connected by a garden and the building is made of bricks. The owners bought wine and olive oil from Italy and grain and pewter from Britain. Some villa rustica owners were ex-soldiers who had built up a pension after their time of service.
