Product description

This arming sword from the Royal Armouries Collection dates back to the late 15th century and is believed to be of English origin.

Swords of this type were medium- to high-status sidearms during the late 15th and early 16th centuries, suitable for use both in and out of armor. Often carried by knights as a secondary weapon, it was effective in combat on foot and while mounted. This sword bears a strong resemblance to the Westminster Abbey sword, which was long associated with Henry V but is now believed to have been part of Henry VII's funeral achievements. Similarities can also be seen with swords found in English churches and depictions on funeral effigies and brasses. Given its well-preserved state, it is possible this sword was originally part of a church monument in England, where it may have been deposited in the late 15th century.

This replica closely matches the original in design and craftsmanship, using traditional methods similar to those employed at the time. It features a sturdy Oakeshott Type XVIII blade, optimized for cutting and thrusting, measuring 76 cm in length. The sword is equipped with long, curved quillons with distinctive terminals, a short grip, and a prominent solid wheel-shaped pommel. The original blade has floral engravings near its base, which have not been replicated due to the damage on the historical piece, making accurate reproduction impossible.

The sheath consists of a wooden core wrapped in leather. A brass chape with intricate cut-outs and an acorn-shaped tip reinforces the end, while the leather throat extends upward to partially cover the guard at the ricasso.

Crafted by Windlass Steelcrafts, the original sword can be found in the Royal Armouries Collection under Object Number IX.1426. Each replica comes with a certificate of authenticity printed on heavy stock.

Prevent rust and corrosion by oiling your weapons regularly. Remove rust easily with black sandpaper. Remove burrs with a whetstone. Make sure you have removed all burrs before using a battle-ready weapon, as they can cause wounds.

Tip: How to adjust the finish of your armour and weaponry
Luxurious (polished)- polish the steel with metal polish or toothpaste. You can even give the item a mirror-like polish. Test on a small surface first!
Handmade (matte)- soak the steel in cola for 40 minutes to 20 hours. Check regularly and treat with black sandpaper.
Antique (patinated) leave the steel to rust for some time in a damp environment, preferably outside. Remove the red layer of rust, to reveal the corroded top layer.

Please note. After finishing the product yourself, the warranty and return right expire. Celtic WebMerchant is not responsible for the obtained result."
