Product description

Originally created around the 3rd c. BC to act as a force of personal bodyguards to the generals of the Roman Republic, the Praetorians were employed in camp or in battle and would serve as a final reserve force against attacks made upon commanders during campaigns. During the Roman Empire, this hand-picked elite unit provided protection to the Emperor. Being the only armed soldiers admitted within the walls of Rome, they were also granted a higher pay and a shorter length of service than standard legionaries. The Praetorian Guard was eventually disbanded in the 4th c. AD by Emperor Constantine the Great.

The articulated, fully wearable Roman leg guards we offer here are crafted from approx. 1 mm thick brass and blackened on the inside. The shin and knee plates are hinged together for adequate freedom of movement. They are bordered with three brass eyelets on each side and delivered with square, 3 mm thick leather cords for proper lacing and size adjustment for a perfect fit. These beautiful Roman greaves are elaborately embossed: While one features a guardsman and serpents, the other is adorned with the effigy of Hercules, also framed by serpents. Both knee protections show the Roman eagle.
