Product description
This votive statue is a replica of a piece from the 2nd century AD found in a Roman villa in Daun, near Prüm. Small statues of Juno were placed in house altars throughout the whole Roman empire.
Juno is the goddess of pure air, especially of the moon light and therefore, just as all moon goddesses, a goddess of women, an ideal of a Roman matrona, who seats as queen on a lofty throne in heaven (Iuno Regina). She guards the wife and mother and nearly everything belonging to her cult had to do with the female sex. Her relationship with her husband was not affected by the love adventures of her husband Jupiter, as Zeus alienated himself from his wife Hera. Composure and dignity were marks of Juno`s character and wedded life.
This statue is hand made from alabaster and is 21 cm high. Possibly these small statues were painted to make them get a life like appearance.
