Product description

This item can only be shipped to the EU

Tempera was invented in Ancient Egypt. This type of paint was used for painting temples, reliefs, papyrus and tombs. Tempera was appropriated by the Greeks and Romans and was used until the Late Middle Ages. Sometimes tempera was used to paint the walls of an entire temple or church.
Tempera is made by grinding material into powdered pigments. Subsequently it is mixed with egg yoke and water. Tempera is difficult to make and therefore oil paint became quickly popular around the Renaissance period.
This tempera can be used for painting busts and reliefs. This set contains 17 different colors in tubes of 7 grams.
Some pigments used for historical tempera were deadly dangerous. Heavy metals were used, people used Arsenic for making yellow and leadwhite for white. During the Early Middle Ages illuminations were made by monks, they must have known how some colors detoriated their health. Nowadays tempera is completely safe and pigments like that are not sold any longer (even not for art histrical research).

This item is produced in limited quantities only. This means that every piece is unique. Sizes & finish may vary lightly from piece to piece.
