Product description

The gladius is the weapon that enabled the Roman legionaries to conquer a large part of the world. They were in use from around the third century BC. until the third century AD. There are different types of gladii, which are called after their place of origin. This replica is a Pompeii type gladius, a late development of the gladius from around the middle of the first century AD and the successor of the Mainz type. The four best-known examples of this type were excavated in Pompeii and date from around 79 AD, the year that the Vesuvius erupted. The Pompeii type has probably been the most popular gladius type. This is the shortest type and has a shorter tip than the Mainz type. Over the years, the Pompeii type became longer.

This luxurious gladius is an asset for collectors of classic weapons and for Roman re-enactors. It is based on an original from the first century AD. The brass fittings on the scabbard are based on originals in the Museum Valkhof in Nijmegen (Netherlands). This replica has a blade made of EN45 steel and a hilt made of wood with a screwed pommel.

The gladius is delivered including a richly decorated luxurious brown leather scabbard with a wooden core. The scabbard tip and the two square brass decorations at the top, contain iconography that refers to warfare and victory. The lower side of the scabbard has an additional decoration, a brass fitting shape like a palmette. The scabbard has brass rings so you can hang it on your belt.

Prevent rust and corrosion by oiling your weapons regularly. Remove rust easily with black sandpaper. Remove burrs with a whetstone. Make sure you have removed all burrs before using a battle-ready weapon, as they can cause wounds.

Maintenance & care
Just as with weaponry, you can care for your shoes and leatherware by applying a little Ballistol after cleaning. This prevents the leather from drying out.

Tip: How to adjust the finish of your armour and weaponry
Luxurious (polished)- polish the steel with metal polish or toothpaste. You can even give the item a mirror-like polish. Test on a small surface first!
Handmade (matte)- soak the steel in cola for 40 minutes to 20 hours. Check regularly and treat with black sandpaper.
Antique (patinated) leave the steel to rust for some time in a damp environment, preferably outside. Remove the red layer of rust, to reveal the corroded top layer.

Please note. After finishing the product yourself, the warranty and return right expire. Celtic WebMerchant is not responsible for the obtained result."
