Product description

Celtic, Germanic, and later Viking peoples wore miniature weapons as amulets. These provided protection to the wearer. Among Indo-European peoples, the spear was considered a noble weapon, as seen in Gungnir, the spear of Wodan/Odin. The axe represented Donar. Jewelry like this is found throughout the Germanic world.

In Viking mythology, Gungnir was Odin’s spear, which always hit its target and returned to its owner’s hand. During the war between the Aesir and the Vanir, Odin initiated the battle by throwing his spear over the gathered Vanir. At the start of battles, warriors would also throw a spear toward the enemy line, following Odin’s example and hoping for a favorable outcome.
