Product description

This Viking spectacle helmet with chainmail from the Vendel period is 1.6 mm thick and suitable for reenactment battles. Helmets like this were worn between 550 and 1066 and are a beautiful early medieval model based on an original from Valsgarde, Sweden. Valsgarde was only 3 km from Gamla Uppsala, the ancient center of the Swedish kings and the pagan faith in Sweden. The helmet consists of steel plates that are attached to each other with steel strips, or Spangen. The helmet provides good protection to the nose, eyebrows, head and neck. The aventail consists of butted chainmail and the rings have a diameter of 8 mm. The inside of the helmet is lined with cotton padding, which you can adjust to your size. You can fasten the helmet with the leather chin strap.

Maintenance & care
Prevent rust and corrosion by oiling your armour regularly. Remove rust easily with black sandpaper.

Maintenance & care

Remove rust from your chainmail by rubbing the rings together (just like when hand-washing clothes, but without water). The rings will grind together and the rust will come off.

Choosing the size that fits you best
Add 3,5 cm to your head circumference if you wear an arming cap under your helmet.
Add 2,5 cm to your head circumference if you wear a chainmail coif under your helmet.
Add 6 cm to your head circumference if you wear both an arming cap and a chainmail coif under your helmet.

Tip: How to adjust the finish of your armour and weaponry
Luxurious (polished)- polish the steel with metal polish or toothpaste. You can even give the item a mirror-like polish. Test on a small surface first!
Handmade (matte)- soak the steel in cola for 40 minutes to 20 hours. Check regularly and treat with black sandpaper.
Antique (patinated) leave the steel to rust for some time in a damp environment, preferably outside. Remove the red layer of rust, to reveal the corroded top layer.

Please note. After finishing the product yourself, the warranty and return right expire. Celtic WebMerchant is not responsible for the obtained result."
