Viking shield with sun motif

The Battle-Ready Viking shield is painted with a characteristic symbol. The shield is depicted on a rune stone in Gotland in Stenkyrka (Lillbjärs III). The stone dates from the 9th–10th century AD. Symbolism of this kind can be seen in various Viking jewellery. Gotland is also known for its 5th–6th century stones bearing sun motifs, and it is for this reason that we consider the sign on this shield to be a further development of that tradition. Viking shields of this type were employed across the Viking world. The Battle-Ready Viking shield features a steel reinforcement on the outer edge. This type of shield boss was worn throughout the Viking world between the 9th and 11th centuries. On the inside, behind the shield boss, a handle is mounted, permitting it to be held with ease.
