The wooden sheet is a replica of originals excavated at a military camp at Vindolanda near the current border between England and Scotland. The originals were employed by auxiliae to send messages to one another and to their families. It was a historical 'app'; amongst the messages, for example, is one from a soldier who asks his family for warmer socks. The size of the wooden sheet is based on the sizes of the originals. The sheet may be folded and tied with a cord in the original style.
